Ulcinj, Montenegro | 7–11 April 2025
The UNESCO UNITWIN Network for Underwater Archaeology is pleased to announce a specialized training program in underwater archaeology and digital documentation, taking place from 7 to 11 April 2025 in Ulcinj, Montenegro. This initiative is designed to strengthen regional capacities in the research, preservation, and sustainable management of underwater cultural heritage (UCH), focusing on participants from Montenegro and Albania.
Building Skills for the Future of Underwater Cultural Heritage
Organized by the Center of Archaeology at the University of Montenegro, in collaboration with the UNESCO International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar, and supported by UNESCO through the UNITWIN Network, this five-day training offers an intensive program combining both theoretical knowledge and practical application.
Participants will develop essential skills in maritime archaeology and digital recording techniques, with a particular focus on photogrammetry—a method used to create precise 3D models of submerged heritage sites. These techniques support long-term research, monitoring, and conservation efforts, helping to safeguard cultural heritage located beneath the water’s surface.
What to Expect
The course is delivered in English and combines classroom-based lectures with practical sessions. Under the guidance of experienced specialists, participants will:
- Learn the principles of underwater archaeological research UCH digitization
- Receive hands-on training in photogrammetry for both coastal and underwater environments
- Apply digital tools for the documentation and promotion of underwater heritage
- Participate in practical exercises, including controlled diving sessions and photogrammetric documentation
An international certification of attendance will be awarded upon completion.
Eligibility and Application
The training is open to citizens of Montenegro and Albania with academic or professional backgrounds in archaeology, cultural heritage management, diving, or related disciplines. While a scuba diving certification is advantageous, it is not a mandatory requirement.
The selection process will prioritize applicants whose experience and professional activities demonstrate a clear capacity to apply the skills gained through the training within their institutions, research projects, or initiatives.
Interested candidates must submit a curriculum vitae (CV) and, if applicable, a copy of their diving certification by 10 March 2025 to darkok@ucg.ac.me.
Practical Information
This training is part of the WRECKS4ALL 2.0 project, co-funded by the IPA South Adriatic Programme, which aims to foster cross-border cooperation and enhance expertise in underwater cultural heritage preservation through digital innovation.
The program will provide:
✔ Accommodation and meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
✔ Transportation for participants traveling from Albania
✔ Access to professional equipment (participants should bring their own laptops)
Please note: All selected participants are required to arrange their own accident insurance, including coverage for any diving-related activities.
