Master description
The Archaeology and Preservation of Maritime Heritage track is one of three specializations offered within the Master’s program in Art History. It combines professional training, disciplinary courses focused on research and scientific writing (workshops), and foundational teachings in maritime archaeology. The program follows a progressive structure, with increasing specialization each semester.
In the first year, students complete an intermediate research thesis to develop their scientific writing skills and build a corpus of study materials. They are also required to participate in at least one archaeological fieldwork project—either underwater or terrestrial—within France or through international partnerships. The second year culminates in the completion and defense of a Master 2 research thesis.
The program places a strong emphasis on professional engagement, featuring contributions from experts in the field. The curriculum also provides practical experience in maritime and underwater archaeology, along with a deep understanding of professional practices and preservation methods.
The program includes integrated underwater archaeology fieldwork as part of the training and benefits from partnerships with several international institutions, such as the Higher Institute of Human Sciences of Tunis and the National Heritage Institute in Tunisia, the underwater excavation of the ancient port of Tyre in Lebanon, and the Recanati Institute for Maritime Studies at the University of Haifa in Israel. In addition to preparing students for careers in underwater archaeology, the program also provides them with the necessary skills for museum curation and heritage management. Graduates gain essential expertise and field experience, enabling them to pursue careers in archaeological research, site management, and the preservation of maritime cultural heritage.
