Nicolaus Copernicus University

Master description

The Master’s degree in Underwater and Wetland Archaeology at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń is designed for both practitioners and theorists: it offers comprehensive training in the investigation, documentation, and interpretation of submerged and waterlogged archaeological sites. The curriculum integrates field-based methodologies with theoretical knowledge, covering a wide temporal and cultural spectrum—from prehistoric lake dwellings to modern-era shipwrecks.

Students receive instruction in excavation techniques applicable to underwater and wetland contexts, the use of advanced documentation tools such as GIS and photogrammetry, and analytical methods including palynology and environmental reconstruction. The programme also includes modules on maritime history, navigation, submerged landscapes, and settlement patterns along and on water bodies. Courses are taught by experienced specialists and include the opportunity to participate in archaeological field training and optional diving instruction.

This interdisciplinary approach equips graduates with the skills required to conduct archaeological research in complex aquatic environments, while fostering a critical understanding of the cultural, environmental, and historical dynamics of human interaction with water.
