Master description

The Master of Arts in Global Maritime Archaeology explores humanity’s relationship with the sea, coastal environments, and maritime economies. Students analyze how natural and human impacts shape underwater sites, while studying the evolution of the discipline and international heritage legislation. The curriculum bridges theoretical history with scientific methodology, covering landmark projects and seminal publications in the field.

Coursework traces the development of seafaring, navigation, and maritime technology from antiquity to the modern era. Students examine the sea as a conduit for moving people, goods, and ideas, as well as a space for naval strategy and colonial power projection. The program also incorporates ethnography and iconography, training students to record and preserve the intangible heritage, rituals, and traditions of coastal communities.

Students gain practical proficiency in planning offshore surveys using specialized hardware and software. The curriculum teaches technical skills for cataloguing traditional vessels, interpreting ship drawings, and administering “first-aid” conservation to stabilize waterlogged artifacts. This training culminates in an original research dissertation designed to meet professional publication standards.

The MA programme provides a field school once every year. Students spend four weeks excavating a harbour deposit at a depth not exceeding 5 m. This experience provides students with practical knowledge of excavation logistics, underwater excavation and documentation methodologies, as well as the conservation of archaeological finds. Throughout the year students practice boat recording of Maltese traditional boats, document collections from the Maritime Museum and assist a hands-on experience workshop on conservation of waterlogged finds. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in other university-led projects on a yearly basis.
