Last Call for Applications: Master of Maritime and Coastal Archaeology (Aix-Marseille University)
Students interested in pursuing a career in underwater and coastal archaeology are reminded that the application deadline is fast approaching for the Master’s Degree in Maritime and Coastal Archaeology at Aix-Marseille University. Applications for the next promotion, starting in September 2026, must be submitted by 16 March 2026.
This two-year, full-time international Master’s programme provides advanced training for future specialists in underwater archaeology and coastal archaeology. The programme combines theoretical instruction with practical field and laboratory experience, preparing students for research, heritage management, and professional work in maritime archaeology.
The teaching is led by the academic team of the Centre Camille Jullian (Aix-Marseille University / French National Centre for Scientific Research – CNRS), with the support of the Department of Underwater Archaeological Research (DRASSM) of the French Ministry of Culture, one of the leading institutions in underwater heritage research and management.


Admission Requirements
Applicants should demonstrate:
- A solid academic background at undergraduate level (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
- Strong written and oral communication skills in French, including the ability to write clearly, argue effectively, and adapt communication to different contexts.
- A coherent and well-motivated study or professional project, aligned with the objectives and content of the programme.
- Relevant archaeological experience, such as fieldwork, institutional work, or laboratory activities, documented in the application file.
Language Requirements
- Applicants from countries where French is the official language must demonstrate at least B2 level in English, certified within the last two years.
- Applicants from countries where French is not the official language must demonstrate at least B2 level in French, certified within the last two years.
Diving Certification
Because underwater fieldwork is an integral part of the training, applicants must hold a recognized recreational diving certification, such as:
- CMAS Level 2, or
- PADI Two-Star (or equivalent) certification.
